1. In January 1998, a poultry farmer bought 100 hens at N150.50 each. During the year, she obtained 12,500 eggs which she sold at N125.00 per score. She spent N30,050.00 on feeding and N12,000.00 on drugs for the year. By December 1998, she sold the 80 surviving hens at the rate of N250.00 each. Find her percentage gain or loss.

2. A man wishes to keep some money in a savings deposit at 25% compound interest so that after 3 years he can buy a car for N150,000.00. How much does he need to deposit now?

3. In a class of 80 students studying for a session examination, 34 students study English, 29 study History while 42 study Geography. 12 study English and History, 14 study Geography and History and 8 study English and Geography while 4 students did not study any of the three subjects.

I. How many students study the three subjects?

II. How many students study any combination of two subjects only?

4. In a survey of villagers, it was found that 25% of the people have visited Kaduna and 20% have visited Calabar. If 5% have visited both cities, what percentage have visited neither towns?

5. In a survey of 290 newspaper readers, 181 of them read The Daily Times, 142 read The Guardian, 117 read Punch and each read at least one of the three papers. If 75 read The Daily Times and The Guardian, 60 read The Daily Times and Punch and 54 read The Guardian and Punch.

a. Draw a Venn diagram to illustrate this information.

b. How many readers read:

I. all three papers.

II. exactly two of the papers.

III. exactly one of the papers.
